Advancing Key Issues
Our efforts are informed by the needs of working families and a strong commitment to social and economic justice. Our work is an extension of these values. We use our expertise and resources to advance the following key issues:
Working Families
Disguising cuts to funding for education, health care, and other key public services as “good economics” is an old trick used by the right wing to push ideological ballot measures into law. This strategy was at the center of the 2010 election cycle and will continue to be a major battle for as long as the economy remains sluggish. We work to support ballot measures that create and fund responsible programs that benefit working families and fight efforts to cut or privatize key public services.
Clean Energy and Environmental Protection
We are committed to creating jobs in America by advancing clean energy priorities through the initiative process. As this issue becomes increasingly important to voters, ballot measures present a real opportunity for action. We also work to fight rollbacks of good environmental laws and advance measures that protect clean air and water.
Equal Opportunity
For years, ballot measures have been used to attack underrepresented communities. Time and time again, voters reject these harmful initiatives, but the process is still a drain on resources. We work to get out in front of the right wing, reducing the impact these attacks have on our communities and helping send more resources to programs that advance opportunities for women and people of color.
Immigration
There have been ten anti-immigrant measures on statewide ballots in the last decade. Only two were defeated. We can and must do better. Our state and national partners are committed to engaging the communities affected by these initiatives in order to help improve their lives and protect their communities from attacks on the ballot.
LGBT Equality
LGBT people have suffered through high-profile attacks on marriage equality, job protections, and personal freedoms far too many times. Bad actors have tried to use anti-equality initiatives to drive turnout in a way that benefits their interests – although there is no evidence that this has worked. As long as LGBT issues are used for political sport, we must stay vigilant, anticipate threats, and protect the LGBT community from these abhorrent attacks while working to overturn prohibitions on equality.
Reproductive Justice
Ballot measures restricting reproductive justice have, by and large, failed to change the law. However, advocates for choice have had to spend tens of millions defending reproductive freedom. We work with state and national partners to avoid costly fights by identifying threats early and formulating proactive strategies where possible.
