The Oregonian: Once again, the Oregon Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers are pursuing conservative initiative activist Bill Sizemore in court. And they're also going after Nevada businessman Loren Parks, the largest individual donor to political causes in Oregon.
The unions won a civil racketeering judgment against Sizemore in 2002, and this time they filed a lawsuit accusing him of setting up a "sham charitable organization" used to funnel Parks money into four initiative campaigns on the 2008 ballot.
Sizemore, who has decried the 2002 legal judgment as politically biased, will no doubt say this is yet another attempt by powerful public employee unions to shut him down. But there have been plenty of questions raised about Sizemore's financial maneuvering before 2008, and conservative activists have already been trying to cut him out of the action.
In large part, the lawsuit may be aimed at Parks, who has deep pockets and may well be interested in continuing to support initiative activity. A new report from Common Cause Oregon says Parks, who splits his time between Nevada and Oregon, has given nearly $13 million to political causes in the state since 1992. The unions are seeking treble damages for their cost of fighting the Sizemore measures, all of which were defeated.
