The Oregonian: Opponents of the $733 million tax package passed by the Oregon Legislature collected enough signatures to put the two measures before voters on Jan. 26, the Oregon secretary of state's office announced Thursday.
The official certification placing the referenda on the ballot was no surprise. Opponents of the tax hikes had collected more than two times the 55,179 signatures each needed to qualify. Officials said that about 80 percent of the signatures were valid in a sampling of 1,000 taken at random from each petition.
Thursday's action kicks off what is expected to be a multi-million-dollar campaign waged between powerful rivals. A coalition of several business and conservative groups - which has dubbed itself Oregonians Against Job-Killing Taxes - is working to defeat the tax hikes.
Meanwhile, public employee unions and a wide variety of other groups who say the tax hikes are needed to avoid harmful cuts to schools and other services have lined up to support the taxes under the banner of a group called Defend Oregon.
