St. Louis Post-Dispatch: If at first you don’t succeed …Or, maybe, third time’s a charm? For what is at least the third time since 2006, opponents of a measure that protected stem cell research in Missouri are seeking to change Missouri’s constitution to outlaw the controversial form of research. The office of Secretary of State Robin Carnahan announced today that 7 different ballot initiatives have been approved for petition circulation, and four of them are related to overturning the 2006 constitutional amendment that protected stem cell research in Missouri. The initiatives were filed by Missouri Roundtable for Life, which has been involved in legal battle with Carnahan’s office over her wording of proposed ballot issues submitted by the group earlier this year. Back in 2006, a similar legal battle kept a stem cell proposal off the ballot. Expect more time in the Cole County Courthouse before these petitions are circulated. If the language is approved, supporters will need to obtain signatures from 8 percent of registered voters from six of the state’s nine congressional districts based on the total votes cast in the 2008 gubernatorial election.
