Reno Gazette Journal: An initiative petition filed this week seeking to outlaw abortion in Nevada is part of a national effort launched in at least eight states that has divided anti-abortion activists. Conservative activist Richard Ziser of Las Vegas formed the Nevada Personhood Committee this week to gather signatures for a petition that would change the state constitution to give due process rights to "everyone possessing a human genome."
The petition mirrors others being supported by the national group Personhood USA. But the effort is slow to garner support from Nevada's anti-abortion activists or leading political candidates who describe themselves as "pro-life." Don Nelson, president of Nevada Life, said his coalition's efforts are better focused on electing anti-abortion candidates and ensuring the federal health care bill doesn't expand access to abortions. "Right now, we feel those measures will yield more progress for the pro-life movement," Nelson said. "We would have to pull back from those efforts to get on something like this (petition) that doesn't promise a lot of return. "This bill has no chance of ending abortion in America or in Nevada. And the effect of this could add more precedence to supporting Roe v. Wade." Nelson said the current U.S. Supreme Court would not yield an anti-abortion opinion should such a state law be challenged at that level.
