KSRM: Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell yesterday certified two initiatives. One is related to local property tax exemptions. The second initiative is related to using public office to enrich oneself. Sponsors now must start gathering the necessary number of signatures required to place these measures on the ballot for voter action. Petition booklets will be prepared by the Division of Elections. The Residential Property Tax Initiative proposes to allow municipalities, upon voter approval, to increase residential property tax exemptions from $20,000 up to $50,000. The bill also allows municipalities to pass a law adjusting this exemption, based on changes to the cost of living. The second ballot initiative proposes to make it a Class A felony for public officials to enrich themselves, a relative, a close friend, a business associate, past, present or anticipated employer or contributor. This ballot initiative would also make it a Class A felony for a person to convince a public official to violate this law.
