Joplin Globe: Organizers sought backing in terms of people and money on Thursday in a Joplin stop to stump for a proposed constitutional amendment aimed at requiring a secret ballot in union elections. The goal of the effort is to derail the federal Employee Free Choice Act before Congress that, if adopted, would make it easier for employees to organize for union representation. “We’ve got to kill the bad idea, not just the bill,” Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder said to a gathering of more than 50 people at Granny Shaffer’s restaurant. The campaign — “Save Our Secret Ballot” — is working to place on the November 2010 election ballot an amendment to the Missouri Constitution guaranteeing the right to vote by secret ballot when employee representation is being decided. The goal is to get the provision on constitutions in Missouri and other states “to show that people are overwhelmingly opposed,” Kinder said, adding “that’s what the polls show.” “It’s guaranteed to pass in the House and it’s only one or two votes shy in the Senate,” said Gene Schwartz, Neosho, who served as emcee for the event. “The more states that act, the less Congress is likely to pass it.” Kinder said Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill has been privately critical of the bill, “but has pledged to vote for it.” “We need people to talk to her,” he said. Jim McCall, principal officer for the local Teamsters Union, said that union members actually would have the right to vote by secret ballot to determine whether they want to form a union.
