Opponents of Assisted Suicide Want Donor Names Kept Secret

The News Tribune: Opponents of assisted suicide say they are afraid their contributors will be harassed or intimidated by supporters of the Initiative 1000 Death With Dignity campaign, so they want to keep secret the names of people who give them money. Human Life of Washington, a conservative group that opposes abortion and doctor-assisted suicide, is asking a federal judge to throw out parts of Washington's campaign finance laws. Human Life contends the laws are overly broad because they would classify Human Life as a political action committee if it buys radio ads that say suicide is wrong, even if the ads don't actually tell people to vote against I-1000. I-1000 would allow people with terminal illnesses to get prescriptions for lethal doses of drugs to kill themselves if two doctors agree the people have less than six months to live. Supporters, led by former Gov. Booth Gardner, have until July 4 to collect 224,880 signatures to win a spot on the November ballot. The campaign has raised more than $800,000 so far. The Coalition Against Assisted Suicide, whose Web site does not list Human Life as a member, has raised about $60,000 to oppose I-1000. Alex Morgan, I-1000 campaign manager, said Human Life wants to keep voters in the dark because much of the money to pay for "voter education" against assisted suicide is likely to come from out of state, largely from the Catholic Church.
