Oklahoma lawmakers study education spending measure

The Oklahoman: A lobbyist for Oklahoma's largest teacher's organization says a proposed constitutional amendment on education spending is an attempt to make public schools a priority. Joel Robison of the Oklahoma Education Association said Tuesday the Helping Oklahoma Public Education initiative petition would require the state to meet the regional average of per student spending. But skeptical state lawmakers say it would dramatically increase education spending and force budget cuts in other agencies or tax increases. If passed, the measure would force an extra $850 million be spent on public schools over a three-year period. House Appropriations and Budget Committee Chairman Ken Miller and other lawmakers are studying the impact of the measure on the state budget. The HOPE measure is headed for a statewide vote next year.
