Michigan House passes Prop 2-like legislation

FeedStuffs: The Michigan House of Representatives has passed legislation that's essentially identical to the ballot initiative that was adopted by California voters last year -- known as "Prop 2" -- that requires egg-laying hens, sows and veal calves to have space sufficient to lie down, stand up, turn around and extend their limbs. The measure, adopted on an 87-20 vote, must be approved by the Michigan Senate and, if approved there, signed by Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm. Supporters of the measure said it could head off a ballot initiative similar to Prop 2, which it should as it codifies into law the language of Prop 2. Indeed, the Humane Society of the United States, an industrial activist group that supports vegetarianism that carried Prop 2 to the California ballot, has said it supports the House legislation.
