Washington Blade: Activists are gearing up for fights against anti-gay referenda that last week were made official in Maine and Washington state. In Maine, a “people’s veto” regarding the recently enacted same-sex marriage law will be on the ballot during the November election.
Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap (D) on Sept. 2 certified that the initiative, known as Question 1, would come up this fall. Supporters of the “people’s veto” submitted nearly 100,000 signatures to put the measure on the ballot. After certifying that 60,391 names were valid, Dunlap’s office stopped counting because only 55,087 signatures were necessary, according to a statement from his office. On the other side of the country, voters in Washington are set this fall to decide the fate of a recently enacted domestic partner registry expansion. The law made Washington’s domestic partner registry the legal equivalent of marriage. Among other things, it expanded partner benefits for public sector employees.
