Seminole Chronicle: By the time the Chronicle went to press Tuesday, President Barack Obama had addressed the joint session of Congress to try to reign in the national debate on healthcare. Local politicians are weighing in on the debate as well. The Seminole County Democrats have passed a resolution to encourage politicians to support healthcare reform that includes a government-run insurance option, while local Republicans are supporting a state constitutional amendment that would essentially nullify national healthcare reform. At the last membership meeting of the Seminole County Democrats, the blue party passed the resolution that would be sent to Florida democratic politicians. They want to see a public option, and a deal breaker would be a tax on existing healthcare benefits for people making less than $250,000 a year. "Every single person, every single member there that evening, voted for it whole heartedly," said Chris Lomas, the chairwoman of the Democratic Executive Committee. "I was pleasantly surprised. We're all on the same page on that."
Scott Plakon, the Florida representative who represents the eastern portion of Seminole County, is the co-sponsor of a proposed state constitutional amendment that would essentially nullify national healthcare reform if it were to pass. The proposal would have to be passed with three-fifths of the legislature to make it to the ballot in 2010, where it would require a 60 percent vote. Plakon was guarded when asked whether he thought it would pass, although he asked why anyone would be against keeping an option open for healthcare. "Our bill is very simple," Plakon said. "It preserves the choice of Floridians to make free choices over their own healthcare without being fined and penalized by the federal government through the IRS."
