Redlands Daily Facts: A big turnout by Latinos - the state's fastest-growing electoral bloc - could be a deciding factor in the campaign. Latino voters in California have previously gone to the polls against same-sex marriage. According to a poll by the Field Research Corp., 49 percent of Latinos said they would vote in favor of banning gay marriage. Thirty-eight percent said they intended to vote against the prohibition, while 13 percent were undecided. Opponents of same-sex marriage say Latinos come from tight-knit families that stress conservative religious values. The position of many Latinos on same-sex marriage contrasts sharply with their more liberal views on economic and foreign policy issues, analysts said. "For the most part, Latinos are liberal on civil rights and reducing poverty and they don't favor the war," said Elsa Valdez, a sociology professor at Cal State San Bernardino. "But Latinos are very conservative on same-sex marriage because of the strong influence of the Catholic Church. My guess is the majority of Latinos would not favor same-sex marriage."
