I-1033: Too much cross to bear, religious leaders say

Seattle Post-Intelligencer: The potential for social service cuts from Initiative 1033 has reunited a once formidable ecumenical network of Seattle-area religious leaders: Its message: I-1033 is too much of a cross to bear. Church leaders came together on Wednesday, recalled past occasions when they've stepped into the breach, but argued that I-1033 would create too large a breach by slapping spending limits on state, county and local governments.

I-1033 would limit growth of government spending to the rate of inflation plus population growth. The one-size-fits-all limit would apply to state government, as well as every city and county in Washington. Excess revenue would provide rebates to property owners. The Rt. Rev. Chris Boerger, bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, said that his church's social service programs depend on state aid. The bishop added that churches can't pick up the slack if state spending endures further cuts.  "The Lutheran Community Services, the Lutheran Compass Center, the Lutheran Alliance to Create Housing -- all of those receive public funding," said Boerger. "If the community ceases to support these organizations, they cannot function. "Further cutbacks by the state cannot be picked up by churches that run these institutions. The reality is there is not an unlimited amount of money in church and community to do these tasks."
