News-Leader: Patients who want to choose their physician without restrictions by an insurance company are a step closer to their goal. Missourians United for Choice in Healthcare , a Springfield-based group, has the go-ahead to begin collecting signatures to put the measure on the November 2010 ballot. Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan approved the group's ballot language for the issue, Carnahan's Web site confirms. MUCH wants a constitutional amendment that would allow patients to keep their physician despite changing jobs or when their employer adopts a health insurance that steers them to a different health care system. The measure would also allow independent physicians -- those not employed by a health care system -- to participate in all insurance plans if they're willing to meet the insurance company's terms and conditions. The group lobbied unsuccessfully for a similar measure, called "any willing provider," in the last legislative session. It failed in the final hours of the session. "Being able to choose your own health care providers is a fundamental principle of reform that I think all people in our area demand," said Holly Cuoco, a cancer survivor and MUCH president. "We're just trying to, with this amendment to the constitution of Missouri, allow patients to have those rights."
