Candidates vary on California propositions

Los Angeles Times: Two candidates support all six measures. Another opposes all six. The others mix and match in different ways. "I think every gubernatorial candidate of both parties understands that there's absolutely no political benefit that can come from these initiatives for them. So their primary goal is just preventing any political damage," said Dan Schnur, director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at the University of Southern California. Two potential Democratic candidates for governor, state Attorney General Jerry Brown and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa - neither of whom has officially entered the race - have endorsed Propositions 1A through 1F. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, the only formally announced Democratic candidate, said at last month's California Democratic Party convention in Sacramento that he reluctantly supports Propositions 1A and 1B and opposes the other four. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., also says she is considering entering the race for the Democratic nomination for governor. Although Feinstein frequently weighs in on California ballot measure campaigns, she has taken no position on any of May 19 propositions. The Republican race is a little more complicated when it comes to the propositions. Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner opposes all six measures. Former Rep. Tom Campbell and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman agree in supporting 1D and 1E and opposing 1B and 1C. But Campbell favors 1A and opposes 1F. Whitman opposes 1A and favors 1F.
