Fox 25 Boston: Toll opponents are hoping to give Massachusetts voters a chance to have their say during next year's election. The group Citizens Against Road Tolls filed two ballot questions with Attorney General Martha Coakley's office Tuesday, both of which would require the state to eliminate tolls on the Massachusetts Turnpike, Tobin Bridge and Boston Harbor tunnels by Jan. 1, 2012. The questions call for the state Department of Transportation to establish a new trust fund to cover the existing debts on the roadways. The question would also bar the creation of new tolls. Backers of the initiative face a tough road ahead.
Coakley's office must first decide that the questions are constitutional. Then supporters must collect the signatures of at least 66,593 Massachusetts voters by Dec. 2.
