Tampa Bay Online: A November ballot proposal that would loosen Florida's class size limits has received approval from the state Senate. The 26-12 vote today — just two more than required for a state constitutional amendment — sends the measure (SB 2) to the House. If it passes there as expected it would go on the ballot. The measure would revise a class size amendment voters approved in 2002. Most Republican lawmakers and a few Democrats say it's too expensive and too rigid. It sets limits for each class of 18 students in kindergarten through third grade, 22 for fourth through eighth grade and 25 in high school effective this fall. The new proposal would allow those requirements to be met on a school average basis, not in every classroom.
