Durango Herald: Colorado voters will be asked to define when human life begins as proponents of Amendment 48 on Thursday turned in almost 30,000 more valid signatures than was needed to make the November ballot. The ballot measure defines a fertilized human egg as a person. Colorado Secretary of State Mike Coffman said his office has validated more than 103,000 signatures turned in by petitioners, who needed 76,000 valid signatures to make the ballot. Proponents hope passage of the measure would be a step toward outlawing abortion in Colorado. Colorado's Constitution currently does not have a legal definition for a human being. Crystal Clinkenbeard, a spokeswoman for Protect Families Protect Choices, which opposes the measure, said her group has no plans to challenge the signatures, but it will campaign against the measure. The woman behind Amendment 48, 20-year-old Kristi Burton, said 1,300 volunteers for her group, Colorado for Equal Rights, canvassed 80 percent of the counties in the state this winter and spring to collect the signatures. Burton said the ultimate goal of the group is to overturn the 1973 Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion nationwide, but the focus this summer will be on fundraising and a statewide media campaign.
