Associated Press: 2010 legislators to see secret ballot amendment

Associated Press: South Dakota Senate Majority Leader Dave Knudson of Sioux Falls, who seeks the GOP nomination for governor, says he will introduce legislation to send to the state's voters a constitutional amendment to protect the secret ballot. The move is aimed at blunting potential federal legislation that would let a majority of employees at a company organize a union by signing cards, a change from current practice that allows employers to mandate secret ballot elections.

Knudson says the notion of not having a secret ballot hits a nerve with South Dakotans. He and others at a Thursday news conference said constitutional scholars think the state proposal would withstand legal scrutiny. A leader of a group collecting petition signatures for a secret ballot amendment says the group will step aside for the legislative effort. State union leaders have said it's part of a national movement against workers.
