As ballot initiative deadline nears, backers of 40B repeal re-file

Belmont Citizen Herald: The attorney general's office confirmed Tuesday that proponents of a ballot measure to repeal the state's affordable housing law, Chapter 40B of the General Laws, have taken the initial steps to place the measure on the ballot. In 2008, backers of proposal failed to gather the necessary signatures to place the question on the ballot, but organizers told the News Service recently they were confident they would be better prepared this time. 40B promotes affordable housing by authorizing local boards to approve developments along flexible guidelines if a certain percentage of the units meet long-term criteria. Wednesday is the deadline for all ballot measure proponents to file 10 valid signatures with the attorney general, who must then approve the language of the questions before signature gathering drives begin.
