The Arizona Republic: After failing to get anti-affirmative-action initiatives on the ballots in Missouri and Oklahoma, California businessman Ward Connerly may be shifting his attention - and resources - to Arizona. In the past two weeks, Connerly's American Civil Rights Coalition has contributed $90,000 to the Arizona initiative effort, which, like campaigns in other states, seeks to ban the consideration of race and gender in state hiring, contracts and college admissions. Kristina Wilfore, executive director of the progressive Washington, D.C.-based Ballot Strategy Initiative Center, said Arizona can expect to see a "desperate attempt to qualify this initiative in the state." "They need a victory to demonstrate to donors and out-of-state activists that this would have appeal in other states," she said. So far, Connerly's group has contributed $180,000 to the Arizona effort, according the Arizona Secretary of State's Office. Nearly all of that money has been used to pay signature gatherers.
