Union-Tribune: Supporters of same-sex marriage are polling political professionals sympathetic to their cause about the wisdom of returning to the ballot in 2010 to try to overturn Proposition 8, which outlawed same-sex marriages in November. The near-unanimous verdict: Don't do it. “Why are we even talking about 2010?” veteran Democratic strategist Gale Kaufman said with her characteristic bluntness. “What has changed in the hearts and minds of a significant number of Californians?” Consultants whose opinions were solicited by the statewide gay-rights organization Equality California raised a number of red flags about returning to the ballot next year instead of waiting until 2012. Younger voters who tend to be more supportive of same-sex marriage than older ones and who turned out in droves last year to vote for Barack Obama are less likely to do so for a gubernatorial election. Polls show that public attitudes about the issue have not budged since November, when Proposition 8 was approved 52 percent to 48 percent. Reinstating same-sex marriage means asking for “yes” votes, always a more difficult sell than “no” in a ballot-measure campaign, especially in a year when California voters are in a foul mood. A third loss at the ballot box could set the push for same-sex marriage back years.
