Seacoast Online: Several top Maine Republicans have filed an application for a people's veto referendum to challenge a newly enacted tax code overhaul. Application signers include Maine Republican Party Chairman Charles Webster, Maine Senate Minority Leader Kevin Raye and Maine House Minority Leader Josh Tardy. A filing had been expected. Webster had said previously the intent would not be to undo an income tax rate cut included in the overhaul package. But the ballot proposal being applied for would repeal the entire overhaul, including the income tax rate cut as well as a broadening of the state sales tax and an increase in Maine's meals and lodging tax. Webster said Friday organizers concluded "it made more sense" to target the whole overhaul package.
