Associated Press: Three former state lawmakers are challenging a proposed ballot initiative that would ask voters to change how some Missouri judges are selected. Missouri's governor appoints judges to the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals and some trial courts from slates of finalists nominated by special commissions. Critics of that process are backing a ballot measure to allow governors to appoint anyone they want with Senate confirmation. The Jefferson City News-Tribune reported Tuesday that two lawsuits were filed. Democratic Sen. Harold Caskey filed one of the lawsuits. The other was filed by former Democratic Sen. John Schneider and former Republican Sen. Roseann Bentley. The lawsuits challenge a cost estimate prepared by the state auditor. They also contend the petition has errors and shouldn't have been approved by the secretary of state.
