Greenwood Commonwealth: Billy Hewes, the president pro tempore of the Mississippi Senate, is expected to run for lieutenant governor in 2011. The Gulfport Republican would be a viable candidate, although, with a few exceptions, Gulf Coast candidates have found it difficult in the past to win statewide elections. The lieutenant governor’s race is expected to be wide open in two years, with the incumbent, Phil Bryant, sounding like he will be running for governor to succeed Haley Barbour. Hewes has acknowledged to being instrumental in killing a voter ID bill in this year’s session of the Legislature after it appeared that a compromise bill was going to settle that long contentious issue.
The action by Hewes and a handful of his GOP colleagues to sidetrack the legislation upset a lot of people who wanted voter ID, including some of his fellow Republicans. Hewes says that he opposed the bill because it had three “poison pills” -- early voting, late registration and a mentality of “pass it first and fix it later.” Critics, though, think Hewes and friends killed the bill so they could push an already planned initiative petition. The statewide referendum is now timed to coincide with the 2011 elections, which conventional wisdom says could boost GOP turnout. Could it be that Hewes had an ulterior motive for killing the voter ID bill?
