Voters May Decide Fate of Payday Loans

The fight between state lawmakers and payday lenders has entered a new phase as the industry is attempting to get on the ballot this fall in Ohio and Arizona and take its case directly to voters. Until now, the industry has largely confined its efforts to battling state legislatures, many of which have moved to protect borrowers who take out the short-term, high-interest loans. Ohio, New Hampshire and Virginia lawmakers approved payday reforms this year. Now industry officials are trying a new tack.

Foes Say Petition Circulators Uses Illegal Means

State Representative Kyrsten Sinema claims Connerly is illegally hiring people from out of state to gather petition signatures. "We don't want criminals going door-to-door in Arizona. We don't want petition circulators lying to voters. We don't want out of state circulators gathering petitions in Arizona," said Sinema. "Connerly himself publicly acknowledged that half of his signature gatherers in the state of Colorado came from outside of the state of Colorado which is illegal in the state in the state of Colorado as it is here in Arizona." The group sent Connerly a letter asking him to guarantee that he'll follow state laws while trying to get the measure on the Arizona ballot.
